Gay Marriage...Yay or Nay?
Even though more and more countries, and more and more states are slowly legalizing 'Gay Marriage' there is still a common debate on whether its 'right' or whether it should be 'allowed'. Me personally, being a Lesbian who is a hopeless romantic, loves the idea of one day getting married to my beautiful girlfriend. But others think differently, and it's not just homophobic straight people. Now, In the UK, the law for equal marriage has recently been passed so tying the knot isn't a problem for me, however the dream is to have 'gay marriage' known as just 'marriage' in every single country. Right?
I recently had a very interesting debate with a friend of a friend regarding whether 'equal marriage' is the way forward. The great thing was, this guy (let's call him...Jack) didn't know I was remotely gay. This is great because, I love hearing peoples opinions without them trying not to offend me, or just hating on me right from the start. The whole debate becomes 10 times more interesting!
As soon as the issue was brought up, it became clear that 'Jack' was homophobic. The first thing he said was "Gays shouldn't be allowed to get married". Upon asking 'why?' he replied with the simple answer of "Because it's wrong". He had no other explanation, no reasoning, nothing substantial that could ever make me even consider his point. However I wanted to know more so continued the conversation... "So why do you think it is wrong for two girls or two guys to marry each other?" 'Jack' looked at me like I had just asked the most stupid question in the world. "Because they are the same sex, that's the reason why they shouldn't get married". "So..." I said "..The man who's forcing his girlfriend to marry him and who also beats her on a regular basis should be allowed to get married to that woman, just because they are of opposite gender yeah?" By this point I could tell I was making 'Jack' feel uncomfortable. "No, it doesn't matter about the gender, he's treating her like sh*t!". I'd got him. "Wait, you just said that two girls say, can't get married because they are the same sex, and that's the sole reason as to why they can't. Yet, you also just said that the man and the woman can't get married because of how one is being treated regardless of the fact they are opposite sexes...So, what if in the lesbian couple they were both being treated perfectly by one another, they worshipped each other, they were fair, loving, everything good you could possibly imagine in a relationship. You think that they still shouldn't be allowed to get married? What are you now judging it on 'Jack'? How they treat each other? Or their sex? Because you've contradicted yourself..." It was obvious 'Jack' was not a happy bunny, he was stumped, he could tell he had lost this argument, so proceeded to stand up in a huff, call me a 'b*tch' and walk off. Lesbian: 1 Homophobe: 0
For too long the LGBT community has been oppressed and treated like second class citizens. Yes it is getting better, but for this day and age, I feel we're not progressing quickly enough. Right now only 16 countries and several sub-national jurisdictions of Mexico and the US have legalized gay marriage. Out of 196 countries across the world to me this is very, very slow progress....
Please comment below what your opinions are on the matter! Do you think Gay marriage should be legalized everywhere? Are you happy with the current progress?
Or comment something completely different! Is there anything you would like me to talk about? or help with? Feel free to express your opinions and views!
